CMNS Staff Recognition – March 2017

The Cook Museum of Natural Science is proud to recognize its staff members on their accomplishments:

Congratulations to Schelly Corry, Executive Director of the Cook Museum of Natural Science, has been appointed to be a member of the Alabama State Department of Education Strategic Planning Committee on Science. This committee meets to evaluate core issues related to Alabama’s student achievement challenges, examine current content expectations for teachers, plan for the recruitment of talented science teachers, compare Alabama content standards for students against those of the most educationally advanced nations, research promising models to raise student achievement, and develop a plan to promote excellence in the teaching and learning of science in Alabama. This work will shape the Alabama education system for the next decade and impact economic opportunities.

Schelly was appointed to the Strategic Planning Committee on Science by the Alabama State Superintendent of Education, Michael Sentance. As a member of the committee, she will provide a vital service to the continued improvement of science curriculum and instruction to the state.

Congratulations are also in order for Cherry Johnson, Collections Manager at the Cook Museum, has been selected to be a peer reviewer by the Institute of Museums and Library Services, headquartered in Washington, DC.  IMLS peer reviewers are extremely knowledgeable in the concerns of museums and libraries and dedicate their time and expertise to advance the highest professional practices in the field.  As an IMLS peer reviewer, Cherry will evaluate applications for funding submitted by museums across the country.

The IMLS is the main source of federal funding for the nation’s 123,000 libraries and 35,000 museums. Through its grant programs, the IMLS supports projects that strengthen an individual museum’s capacity for public engagement and leadership, support excellence in the management, care, conservation, and use of museum collections, and promote an atmosphere of inquiry and learning for all people.
