Participants will learn characteristics of what classifies something as living and become familiar with common habitats. Amazing fun facts about our living world will capture participants’ attention in this interactive program. Fun songs, books, games, and even a live animal demonstration will bring learning to life.\n\n\n\nClass: Rocks, Minerals, and Geology! Oh My!\n\n\n\nGrade Levels: 3rd – 6thMaximum: 10 participantsThe Earth rocks! In this very hands-on program, participants examine up-close specimens from the 3 groups of rocks. Participants test the knowledge they just acquired by sorting and classifying rocks as igneous, metamorphic, or sedimentary types. Using the Mohs hardness scale and other tests for characteristics, participants will identify some of the specimens. Lastly, participants gear up with lab coats, gloves, and goggles to test out how acidic rain has helped shape the North Alabama landscape by conducting experiments with limestone and vinegar.\n\n\n\nClass: Big Fat Lipids\n\n\n\nGrade Levels: 7th – 12thMaximum: 15 participantsParticipants in this class will focus specifically on phospholipids, building cell membrane models, and appreciating how the structure of a phospholipid makes it a perfect building block for the ubiquitous organelle. Participants will investigate how substances move through a selectively permeable membrane and connect their observations to healthy cell function.\n
